- 1G(1970-1980) : 아날로그 셀룰러 시스템. 2kbps.

- 2G(1990-2000) : 디지털 셀룰러 시스템. 14-64kbps.

- 3G(2001-2010) : 광대역. 2Mbps.

- 4G(2004-2005) : LTE (Long Term Evolution). 200Mbps.

- 5G(2019 ~ 현재) : New Radio.

IoT/5G and Animism

Science fiction often provides us with the imagination to visualize what the future will be like. In his 2002 book, French novelist Bernard Werber published a series of short stories in his book Tree of possibility (L’arbre des possible). In the story ‘The world is too good for me (Un monde trop bien pour moi),’ the protagonist wakes up to another day in his life in a cacophonous house filled with incessantly talking machines. When he was utterly fed up with the racket of his own possessions, his salvation comes in the shape of an abrupt burglary. As she breaks in, the burglar cleverly cuts off the cables so that the machines couldn’t communicate with external networks to ask for help while being stolen. The protagonist finds peace from the absence of his talking toaster and other chatty appliances.

A brief history of telecommunication technologies

Internet of Things, or IoT for short, is a system that allows machines to communicate without human control. Communication is the central concept here. As telecommunication evolved in generations, the bandwidth and speed of our networks drastically improved, paving the way for new ways, and new things to join the network. Let’s walk along the history of 0G to 5G of wireless telecommunication.

First, the G stands for Generation when we trace and classify the evolutionary stages of wireless technology. Wireless technology is the transfer of data through electromagnetic waves without the use of a physical wire.

- 0G(pre-1970): Pre-cellular mobile radio telephony system. Closed network. Used as car phones.

- 1G(1970-1980): Analog cellular system. 2kbps. Voice only service.

- 2G(1990-2000): Digital cellular system. 14-64kbps. Voice and short digital messaging services.

- 3G(2001-2010): Broad bandwidth. 2Mbps. Voice, data, multimedia, web browsing and TV streaming.

- 4G(2004-2005): Long Term Evolution (LTE) ~ LTE Advanced. 200Mbps. Dynamic information access, high speed internet and worldwide roaming.

- 5G(2019~now): New Radio. 1Gbps+, low latency network, IoT, autonomous driving and smart factories.

The evolution of wireless communication technology has enabled the transfer of more complex data at a higher and more reliable speed while expanding the range of connectivity at the same time. Especially, the speed at which we can communicate using mobile devices has increased exponentially, from 2kbps (1G) to 1Gbps (5G). That is more than a 500,000-fold increase!

How machines talk to each other

The idea of machines communicating with each other has been around us for quite a bit. Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication existed through forms of RFID (Radio-Frequency identification) scanners in automated factories, security measures, and even transport payment systems. M2M communication is not identical to IoT. However, the evolution of wireless communication technology combined with the backbone of M2M has introduced a coordinated platform of proactively communicating devices, which is IoT.

Beyond what meets our eyes, machines are connected to an invisible network platform. Modern machines use detection sensors to collect information around them and react to their respective environments through using servo motors. In other words, IoT is made possible through four essential backbones: connectivity to platforms, embedded technology, detection sensors, and servo motors.

Let’s look at an example. Smart home systems such as Google Home or Amazon Echo can provide a connecting platform for your appliances. When your air conditioning and thermostat are connected to your IoT home platform, they can interact with each other on this platform. When the temperature sensor in your thermostat learns that the room temperature is higher than a preset threshold of 26°C, it sends this information to the platform. The embedded system in the air conditioning is programmed to react to this new condition. When the Home System sends a wireless control to the air conditioning, the servo motor in the AC is activated, turning itself on to send a cool breeze.

The possibilities are limitless

Smart cities work in similar ways but in a much larger scale. For example, Buenos Aires uses IoT to detect water levels in the sewage to control when to open the water gates and avoid potential flooding. New York City uses the technology to collect data on their citizens water consumption. Several German cities are experimenting with IoT to optimize waste collection frequencies using thousands of sensors in the cities’ garbage bins.

IoT and 5G combined with data clouds and powerful analytics capabilities can process massive amount of data to provide insights that can help us make better decisions. It creates a useful feedback loop to make truly data driven decisions.

The risks of the IoT and 5G

Thousands of years ago, our ancestors believed there were spirits in everyday objects. At the advent of IoT, we are creating a similar yet very different reality. With sensors everywhere, protecting individual privacy is becoming more important and difficult. When we program machines to react to certain conditions, we are giving away control to them to make certain decisions for us. This means cybersecurity is critical to prevent tampering in the transfer of data.

We are still experimenting with new ways to utilize this revolutionary technology, and they are rapidly closing in our very proximity. One day, your toaster may be having a conversation with you on how you like your bread instead of playing back a few simple recorded messages. At the same time, it will be connected to other machines chatting away, preferably in silence unbeknownst to you.
